History

Another Step was founded in 1992 for the purpose of providing an alternative to traditional services offered to people with developmental disabilities in New York State. The organization initially directed its efforts at developing and providing services to people living in the family home. As the organization grew the focus has steadily expanded to encompass a wide range of community based supports.

Another Step has been a leader in providing day services without the use of a facility. Over one hundred people living in Rockland and Weschester Counties now receive day services totally in their community. Day services include such things as volunteering, college experiences, and work. In addition, the agency provides a variety residential opportunities which include supported housing, financial assistance provided via a contract with New York State, and five supervised residences (IRA’s).

Although the organization has substantially grown, both in size and range of supports offered to people, supporting people as individual customers and respecting the choices they make continues to be the essence of what we do. Today Another Step is respected as a creative organization that embraces the principles embodied in the concept of person centered supports. It is an organization that truly lives its mission and embraces its values.
